Challenge Forster Half Distance – 2nd Place

Coming into the race, training had been going solid without anything outstanding so was slightly unsure how the race would go. To make things even more interesting was that there was a small but talented pro field of 5 athletes which is a bit weird to race with because the small field makes it feel almost like a training day. The swim was a non wetsuit swim in a 2 lap river. As you could probably guess the swim start wasn’t as hectic as normal and by about 500m in Todd Skipworth had a small gap to Matthew Pellow, who in turn had a small gap to the group containing Nick Hull, Lindsay Wall and myself. This is how the swim finished as we entered onto the bike.

forsterThe bike was pretty straight forward course of out and back twice with the start having a few corners which were quite slippery as it had been raining all morning. Onto the bike my aim was to catch the 2 athletes out in front and by the time we got to the first turn around at about 25km we were only approx 35 secs behind. I was pretty happy with were I was but I relaxed a bit too much and the gap starting to grow rapidly. Matthew Pellow was pushing the pace out in front and was riding really strong and even with getting my act together in the last 30km. The 2 leaders came off the bike with a 4min lead which I knew was going to be hard to catch.

Onto the run, I felt ok but was struggling with slight cramps in the quads as I had lost some of my vital nutrition on the bike but was determined to try to back my running ability and run into first place. By about the 10km mark I was pretty comfortable in 3rd and not too far behind Pellow but Skipworth was running strong out in front so the chance of a win seemed to be gone. I passed into 2nd place with about 5km to go in the run and was relieved to get to the finish line with a time of 3hr 57min still in 2nd as was started to struggle fair bit.

It was a solid race, with a few mistakes to learn from but I was pretty happy how things went and looking forward to racing in Ironman Western Sydney 70.3 in 3 weeks time where I think I can put in a real good performance in. As also thanks to my sponsors who provide me with the best gear possible, without it none of this would be possible.
